September 18, 2008: Compassionate Alliance Delivering Aid Where It Is Needed Most

With more than 100,000 people still displaced from the devastating effects of Hurricane Ike, and car lines a mile long for victims to receive food, water and ice, Compassionate Alliance's relief teams are busy assisting those who need the most help. The distribution site at Texas City High School is now serving more than 20,000 meals a day to many people who have lost everything.

CA continues to work by organizing volunteers into the distribution process, chain saw teams and on the ground logistics to maintain a steady and effective response for those who are hurting. One partner of CA, Pastor George Brantley, senior pastor of The Rock Church Gainesville, brought 25 men and they have already cleared trees from more than 100 homes of the elderly and widows. With relief efforts still ramping up, CA is staying focused on helping as many people as possible and by collecting relief items at drop off points throughout Marion County.

The items of greatest need are: bottled water, Gatorade, non-perishable foods, health and hygiene items and baby supplies. These items can be dropped off at Meadowbrook Church, New Testament Baptist Church, and the Compassionate Alliance Distribution Center in Ocala (locations immediately below). The First Untied Methodist Church in Dunnellon is also a drop off point for West Marion County.

Compassionate Alliance's response will continue until the relief efforts are completed, which may take several weeks. In addition to the Texas relief effort, Compassionate Alliance is also sending containers of relief to Haiti and Cuba with the help of our alliance partners.

September 2008: Compassionate Alliance Team Heads to Texas

September 8, 2008 Press Release (PDF)

The devastating Hurricane Ike entered Texas with a roar and power seldom seen or witnessed for 50 years in the Lone Star state. While it is too early to estimate the damage or the need, Compassionate Alliance dispatched two trucks this Saturday morning to begin our compassionate response for people impacted by the winds and rains. With 90% of Houston without electric power, it will take weeks for life to return to normal.

In cooperation with Operation Blessing and the Florida Baptist disaster team, over 50,000 meals-ready-to-eat will be distributed as soon as our trucks arrive and our workers and volunteers enter the devastated areas. The work of the CA team is to help establish points of distribution (PODs) in the most critical areas.

We desperately need your help to continue our response of compassion. The cost of fueling the semi-trucks for the trip to Texas is alone $2500. However, this is indeed a small cost when considering that the loads of food have a value of $100,000. Without a doubt, lives will be helped and people encouraged as Christians bear the burden of others.

Gifts of care may be sent by credit card or PayPal. We will do our part; will you continue to do yours?

With appreciation,
Bob Houlihan and Steve Ewing
